Psychology Major & Research Opportunities

Question: What is it like to study psychology at Barnard? And am I able to obtain a master's degree from Barnard?

Answer: A wonderful thing about women's colleges is that our students gravitate towards more traditionally male-dominated fields. This makes psychology one of the most popular majors at Barnard! One thing that's really great about majoring in a STEM field at Barnard is the amount of interaction you have with professors and TAs. Additionally, there are a number of opportunities for independent research in the psychology department as well as opportunity to take part in the Summer Research Institute (SRI). Students who take part in SRI can receive subsidized housing for ten weeks (the duration of the program) while conducting research on or off campus. At the end of the program, students give a presentation on their research. Although Barnard is affiliated with Columbia University, we are strictly an undergraduate institution. Any master's degrees would be granted through a graduate program at Columbia.
