Athletics at Barnard
Fun Fact about Barnard: Barnard is the only women’s college in the United States to compete in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I sports and the Ivy League conference. This is possible through the Barnard Columbia Athletic Consortium, a partnership that allows Barnard students to play on Columbia sports teams. This partnership enables Barnard students to have the athletic resources and benefits of a Division I school while maintaining the small liberal arts college community.
Sports at Columbia and Barnard take on three forms: varsity, club, and intramural. Varsity teams compete against other schools under NCAA regulations and require a student to try-out or be recruited. Club sports allow students to compete against other schools, however not under NCAA regulations. Intramural is like a recreational sports league within the Columbia University community with students competing against each other. Both club and intramural teams usually allow anyone to join with no prior experience necessary. There’s at least 35 teams that fall under each realm, providing ample opportunities for those who want to get involved.
Barnard students love to be involved in sports for a variety of reasons. “The best part of joining a team is the family that I've gained here. They are always there to support me and I have the best times when I'm with them,” said a first year on the women’s club rugby team. A first year on the women’s club volleyball team added, “Part of the reason I chose Barnard was because sports didn’t dominate the campus but it was also very important to me that I could still play sports if I wanted to. Club volleyball does not dominate my life; it only adds to it.” Another first year on the equestrian team mentioned the break that sports give her, “My favorite thing about riding on the team is the break it gives me from life in the city and at school. It is so nice to be able to get a change of scenery by spending some time around horses and out of the city a few times a week.”
No matter your experience or interest level, there’s probably a team at Barnard and Columbia for you and plenty of friends to cheer “ROAR, LIONS, ROAR” while you play.
