Unafraid at Barnard

Thinking Beyond Barnard

Earlier this semester, a group of friends and I went to a spa for a birthday celebration. As we were chatting about our dorms, classes, and friends, a woman came up to us. She had overheard our conversation and wanted to ask us if we were students at Barnard. She was an alum from a few years ago and was so excited to talk to us about our time at Barnard and give us advice on what we should be thinking about for post-graduation life.

When I was applying to Barnard, one thing I was worried about was what schools would help me do well after college. I chose Barnard not only for the fantastic career center but for the alumni network.

Beyond Barnard, our career center, holds a number of workshops throughout the year, focusing on topics like using LinkedIn and how to write a cover letter. They also organize panels and events featuring alumni to give students the chance to learn about life after college.

Throughout the semester, you can also go to a Peer Career Advisor for resume reviews and interview tips. I’ve found them tremendously helpful -- every time I want to apply to a new round of jobs, I like to go back in to get feedback. Since the office is located on the second floor of one of our dorms right by campus it’s super convenient to pop by between classes.

One thing nobody ever talks about -- it can be intimidating to ask for help with professional development! I’ve found Beyond Barnard to be incredibly helpful and welcoming, and the Peer Career Advisors make the whole thing much less intimidating.

Something that makes Barnard unique is the strong alumni network, not only at Barnard but among all of the Historically Women’s Colleges. I have found internships through a Seven Sisters Facebook group, and whenever I meet a Barnard alum they are always willing to chat, even if it’s just for a few minutes. One thing I didn’t realize when I applied is how excited Seven Sisters alums are to help each other out, and I feel so glad to have that wider network.

When you’re just applying to college, it’s hard to imagine how important it will be to have a college that can support you after you graduate. But as you move into the real world, the resources that Barnard has to offer are invaluable.
