Unafraid at Barnard

Beyond Barnard

My name is Jessica Moreira, I am a Senior at Barnard majoring in Economics and minoring in Education. In addition, I am an international student from Brazil and a first-generation and low-income student.

Today I want to talk to you about one of the best resources - in my opinion - that we have on campus. I am talking about Beyond Barnard! This is our amazing career center that has been doing a great job in guiding and helping Barnard students in finding and landing jobs, going to grad schools and pursuing their careers even after graduating. I might be a little biased because I worked there during my first semester and could see how it is such a great office filled with people who are passionate about the work they do.

I would like to highlight some of the resources that Beyond Barnard has and that are so helpful during our time at Barnard. The first one is the internship grant available at the career center for unpaid internships. Yes, you read it right! We know that depending on the industry, it is very hard to find paid internships, though the experience is very important to land a full-time job. In order to help students who do work in these industries, Beyond Barnard has grants available every semester and summer for students who will be working on unpaid internships. In this way, these students can get the experience while still getting paid.

Moreover, Beyond Barnard has amazing advisors who help students to find jobs, prepare for job interviews and for applications to grad schools. The office has advisors specialized in, for instance, med and law school and jobs in finance. Since my first semester, I have been meeting with Greg Triands - one of their amazing advisors - and he has been helping me to prepare for job interviews and to navigate job negotiations. We have developed a great relationship over the years and I am very grateful for all the help he has given me throughout my journey at Barnard.

Finally, one of my favorite resources at Beyond Barnard is the career fair that happens at the beginning of each semester. Beyond Barnard always brings top organizations from many different industries and also many grad schools so students can network with recruiters and workers, interview and potentially land jobs. I connected with the firm that I interned during the summer of my junior year in one of these fairs and couldn’t be more grateful for all the great experiences that these fairs have given to me.

Thus, whether you already know what you want to do after graduating or not, Beyond Barnard will be there to support you in every step of your way into your career. Do not hesitate to contact them once you get at Barnard and to use their resources. Go to their events and take advantage of all the great opportunities they have to offer.
